The sparrow was a symbol used historically by sailors to show off their sailing experience. It’s believed that a sailor tattooed with it had traveled over 5,000 miles. In addition to indicating experience at sea, the swallow is also associated with undying love, devotion, commitment, loyalty and the notion of return rooted in two ideas; the bird’s migration pattern, always returning home and that if a sailor died at sea, birds carry his soul home to heaven.
