Seppuku, or harakiri, is a form of Japanese ritual suicide by disembowelment, typically reserved for samurai. Seppuku was used by samurai to die an honorable death rather than be captured their enemy. It was also practiced as a form of capital punishment for a serious offense, or because they had brought shame upon themselves or their family.
